BVI-Map-Virgin Gorda

Virgin Gorda

Virgin Gorda is likely the most diverse of the British Virgin Islands.  In the south you have the Baths.  Centrally located, you find Spanish Town.  In the north you find - you guessed it - North Sound, with its own range of experiences to be had.  If the only place you sailed in the BVI was Virgin Gorda, you'd probably be happy.  Luckily, you don't have to be satisfied with just the one island, but this island is worth a couple of days of your charter visit!

The Baths

The Baths are amongst those special places in the world that you should really visit once or twice in your lifetime.  It is a beach area punctuated by huge granite boulders - u to 40' long!  It is one of the most popular tourist spots in the BVI, and a great day stop for cruisers.  There is plenty of conjecture about how the granite boulders managed to arrive on this stretch of beach.  Feel free to offer your own personal ideas - given I have heard aliens as an option, I doubt your theory could be more outlandish!

There are plenty of mooring balls at the Baths, and generally you either dinghy or swim to the beach.  The Baths have a self guided tour path, just know that there is a bit of rock climbing (and crawling) involved.  It is definitely worth the effort.

One of the paths takes you up the hill to the aptly named Top of the Baths Restaurant and Bar for breathtaking views, food and drink.

North Sound - Leverick Bay

Leverick Bay is located in Virgin Gorda's North Sound.  It is a full service resort with both a marina and mooring field.  They even have a Pussers store there.  There is also good anchoring in North Sound, so if you want to dinghy into the resort, you can.

There is a restaurant at the resort, but I didn’t eat there because I was going for the Happy Arrr show featuring Michael Bean at the beach bar - and I wasn’t really in the mood for real food!  Instead it was nachos and Painkillers and margaritas all around, which were very good.

The show was fabulous - better than I was expecting, complete with free drinks of rum (part of the show - go and you’ll see what I mean).  Michael Bean is both musician and comedian, and knows how to work up a crowd.  Expect to participate and you’ll have a great time.

The resort also features showers, laundry, a small supermarket, and a freshwater pool!  It is amazing what a luxury that can feel like when you've been swimming in seawater.

The mooring field is good sized, but very popular.  Being in North Sound it is very well protected, and most of the rolling we did overnite was from dinghies going to or from the dinghy dock, so you might want to look for a ball further out if that bothers you.

Definitely a place to visit!
